The group Kasba returns with their new album entitled Darna to the acoustic roots of North African music. With Darna, what means “my house, Kasba brings old compositions of the group in a fresh and existing way using exclusively acoustic instruments. Compared to earlier recordings of the group in an electric setting the compositions on Darna are played with more dynamics and with more focus on improvisation. The album contains both energetic and lively work as well as more introvert tracks. The lyrics concern personal matters in the lives of the Kasba musicians. In the track “Nabki” the group brings a thought to the drummer of the band that died in the 90’s because of a car crash and in “Hay Manou” the feeling of homesickness of the leadsinger to his roots in Morocco is expressed. In “Nabina” the group is sending a message out to make people think over the borders of race, culture and religion. This call is been given extra strength due to the cooperation of Indian singer and writer Raj Mohan and the Ethiopian singer Helen Tessema of Afrisinia.
For the members of Kasba making music with only acoustic instruments was a new experience. In spite of the new acoustic setting the unique and energetic `tajine’ sound of Kasba entirely remained on Darna. In the autumn of 2009 and spring of 2010 Kasba will perform a range of concerts where the work of the album Darna is presented. The official CD presentation of the album Darna takes place on:

Met Darna, wat ‘mijn huis’ betekent, brengt Kasba nieuwe en bestaande composities op een frisse, akoestische manier naar buiten. In vergelijking tot eerdere opnamen worden de bestaande composities op Darna met meer dynamiek gespeeld en is er meer aandacht voor improvisatie. Het album bevat zowel vrolijke en opzwepende nummers als meer ingetogen werk. De songteksten gaan over het persoonlijke leven van de bandleden. Zo wordt in het nummer Nabki een ode gebracht aan een overleden drummer van de band en vertolkt Hay Manou het gevoel van heimwee naar Marokko. Daarnaast wordt men in het nummer Nabina opgeroepen over de grenzen van ras en religie heen te kijken. Deze oproep wordt extra kracht bijgezet door de samenwerking met de Indiase zanger Raj Mohan en de Ethiopische zangeres Helen Tessema van circusgezelschap Afrisinia. Voor de leden van Kasba is het musiceren met enkel en alleen akoestische instrumenten een geheel nieuwe ervaring. Ondanks de nieuwe setting is het unieke en energieke ‘tajine’ geluid, dat in de muziek van Kasba steeds naar voren komt, volledig behouden gebleven. In het najaar van 2009 en het voorjaar van 2010 zal Kasba een reeks concerten geven waarbij het werk van het album Darna gepresenteerd wordt. De officiële CD presentatie van het album Darna van Kasba vindt plaats op zondag 5 april in het Beauforthuis te Austerlitz en op woensdagavond 8 april in theater De Speeldoos te Vught.
